Cairns 3v3 Basketball Tournament to Unite Residents, Foster Community Pride
CAIRNS, AUSTRALIA - Cairns Esplanade will be lit up with a plethora of dunks, drives and dribbles in the name of community pride at a special Embracing 2018-funded 3v3 reconciliation basketball tournament on Saturday 14 April.
The tournament will see a variety of teams – including a range of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander sides - contest a knockout tournament on a newly constructed court which was part-funded by the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games PDIP program.
Event Coordinator and Australian Indigenous Basketball head coach Joel Khalu said the tournament would unite the Cairns community.
“The tournament will improve health and wellness outcomes, give participants a chance to have fun in a competitive environment and help us foster community pride in Far North Queensland,” Khalu said.
“We also have a really high Indigenous population up here and it’s a wonderful opportunity to bring them together to celebrate reconciliation through sport. It’s the perfect vehicle to create social change.
“Basketball is booming up here through the Cairns Taipans and the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games basketball program the city is hosting. There’s never been a more exciting time for a tournament like this.”
The one day tournament will feature an under 18 competition from 10am to 3pm and an open competition from 3pm to 8pm.
Khalu encouraged the community to come down, show their support and enjoy some fantastic free entertainment.
“Basketball is a fantastic sport in that it’s accessible for both genders, all ages and is fully inclusive,” Khalu said.
“There will be some fantastic entertainment on the court and we’ll have some great off court action too with DJs, entertainment and additional programs at the nearby youth activity precinct.”
